7 Things To Do in Watergate Bay

Watergate Bay is a unique beach break that offers an abundance of activities for adventurers of all kinds. From heart-racing kitesurfing to epic surf with serene beach relaxation and culinary delights on the beach, Watergate Bay has it all.  At the heart of the beach activities is Wavehunters, located on the slipway to the beach and also on the beach, we are a focus point for all your beach getaway needs. 

1) Surf Lessons

Experience the wave that Watergate Bay has to offer with a surf lesson from us, our lessons are tailor-made to all from beginners to advanced surfers. We offer 1-1 lessons or group lessons for adults, families and kids only as well as private group lessons too. Allowing you to practise one one-on-one with a coach if you need an in-depth lesson, a chance to surf with the whole family or even a chance to get your children surfing while you enjoy a walk on the beach. The best part? We are open all year round and offer surf hire. So if you have had a lesson or don’t need one but fancy jumping in any way, head over to Wavehunters and we can supply all the equipment for you. 

2) Coastal Walks

Encasing the beach, is an awe-inspiring coastal path, for hiking, running or walking. This coast path stretches across the Cornish coast with Watergate Bay as one of the stop-offs. With stunning, unrestricted views, this coastal path is surrounded by farms, rolling hills and a view out to sea. From these cliffs, you have opportunities for wildlife spotting Dolphins, Puffins and more, so bring some binoculars! Start from Porth Headland in Newquay and head towards Watergate Bay, if you want a longer hike, keep going all the way to Trevose Head! This coastal path offers miles upon miles of beaches, locations and views. Bring some water and food. sun cream and make sure to stay on the path for what is sure to be a great day for any adventurers. 

3) Beach Days

Now if you are lucky enough to have a day off in the sun, head to the beach to unwind and soak up the sun on the soft pristine sandy beach. Bring a towel or chair, grab a coffee and cake from Cubs and head to the sand. The stretch of beach offers endless space for beach games, sand castle building or a chance to find a quiet spot to read and relax. 

4) Foodie Delights

Watergate Bay offers a wide variety of culinary offerings, from burgers and pizzas to lobster and gourmet cuisine. Harbour Beach Bar located at the top of the slipway offers stone-baked fresh pizzas every day, alongside hot dogs and some incredibly tasty ice cream. Fancy to sit inside? Head to The Beach Hut, located further down the slipway for burgers, fish and chips, breakfast, and lunch. With incredible service and views, this family-friendly restaurant is a great stop-off. By the sea and fancying fresh fish? Book a table at the fine dining restaurant Zacry’s, offering freshly caught fish, local meats and a cheese buffet. This is the perfect place for a quiet relaxing meal, offering your senses all things sea. 

4) Wildlife Watching

With the never-ending sea view, Watergate Bay offers the chance to see an abundance of marine and birdlife, from Dolphins and Seals to Puffins, Gulls and more. If you get a small taste of the incredible wildlife and want to see more, drive over to Padstow and jump on one of our Sea Safari tours for even more opportunities to see wildlife in their natural homes. With regular yoga classes on, chances for guided meditation sessions and fun beach fitness classes available with Wavehunters, Watergate is the perfect wellness spot. 

6) Local Attractions

Watergate Bay is close to many local attractions such as Bedruthan Steps, a stretch of dramatic cliff faces that due to its outstanding beauty has become a fast favourite to visit. Or fancy something more inland? Head to The Lost Gardens of Heligan for an old garden dating all the way back to the war that had been revamped in 1990 to showcase its wildlife, endless woodland and a jungle rope bridge that is suspended 100 feet above ancient ferns. This is a must while in Cornwall. Watergate Bay is also home to one of the largest UK festivals – Boardmasters. This coastal festival stretches from Fistral all the way to Watergate Bay, with surf lessons run by us and huge artists playing every day, alongside the surf competition, there is an endless amount to do. 

7) Explore Polzeath

Or if you want a simple beach day out but want to explore further up the coast, head to Polzeath Beach. We can supply surf lessons, surf equipment hire and yoga classes there as well. This beach is packed full of walks, cafes and restaurants for a fun family day out.
