Our Lessons

We’ve been teaching the sport that we love since 2002, and over the years we’ve learnt one important thing: that everyone learns to surf differently

Our experienced surf coaches will tailor their instruction to your individual needs. They'll start by showing you the essential 'pop-up' before hitting the waves. You'll have fun paddling the turquoise waters and catching waves as they head to shore. You'll soon catch the surf bug and will be throwing shakas before you know it!

We think everyone should be able to share in the joy of riding waves. It’s what we call: “surf stoke”. Gift vouchers are also available to buy online.

Location

Our surf school is situated on the beautiful Polzeath Beach, one of the safest and most reliable surf spots in Cornwall.

The award winning beach near Wadebridge attracts a multitude of surfers due to its easily accessible location and long slow breaking consistent waves. If you're lucky you might even spot a dolphin or two. Our professional photographers will be on-hand to capture your surfing triumphs - and your classic wipe-outs!

What level are you?

Beginner

Our experienced instructors will start with the basics on the beach: surf safety, the features of the board and how it works, how to catch a wave and the technique of ‘popping up’ to your feet. Then you’re ready to get wet! In the water, you’ll always be under the watchful eye of our team, and we’ll have you riding the whitewater waves and controlling the board in no time. We’ll work to find the best methods for you, so that we can get you up on your feet by the end of the lesson. Expect wipeouts along the way… they’re half the fun!

Improver

We’ll stick largely to the whitewater but we’ll get you catching waves independently and standing up on the majority of them, and we’ll help you to master your stance and control your speed and direction. Our aim is to enable you perfect your “trim” turns, so that you can turn your board easily in both directions. And then… you’ll be well on your way to becoming a surf icon.

Intermediate

This group is for you if you can surf unsupervised, if you are comfortable with paddling through the whitewater to catch unbroken waves “out the back” and you can stand up on the majority of them. If the surf is pumping, we’ll get you tackling some solid, shoulder-high waves. Are you in?

Advanced

Advanced lessons are customised to suit your surfing ability. We’ll work with you to design a lesson plan and we’ll use creative coaching techniques to help you perfect the skills that you want. We can teach you how to pull off tricky manoeuvres, like Off the Top/Lip, Cutback, Floater, Re-entry; or on a Longboard we can show you how to Cross Step and Hang 5.

Faq's

There is no definitive answer to this question as everyone is unique. However, we would hope to get everyone standing and getting a bit of a feel for the sport that we love so much in the first session. We suggest though having a number of lessons to improve on stability, control, turning and length of ride.

Within a private session we have had as young as 3! However, we would recommend 6 or 7 is a good age for starting out. We do have an age restriction on our group lessons of 8 years old to allow the Instructor to spread their time more evenly across the group. We also ask that a parent is available on shoreline for younger students.

We would highly recommend sticking to bigger foam boards until you have learned how to turn left and right on a smaller green waves. Moving onto smaller boards too soon can really hinder and hold back the speed of your improvement.

Our sessions will go ahead whatever the weather however, in the unlikely event the beach is red flagged for safety reasons by the lifeguards or we feel that it is unsafe, we will postpone your session to a time that suits you or offer a refund.

Yes, we provide all equipment and leaving extra time before your session to get ready is recommended.

Reviews

My boyfriend and I were slightly nervous about surfing as we hadn't done anything like it before but thought we couldn't come to Cornwall and not try surfing. We had nothing to worry about, the instructors were fantastic and really explained the basics well. Before we knew it we were loving our time in the sea and within one lesson could stand up for a whole second. We cant wait to get back out into that sea after our muscles have stopped aching, its a great fun way to work out your whole body.

Our boys (7&5) have been learning with Wavehunters for the last two years and have loved it. They can't wait for half term so they can get back in the surf!

Our daughter had her first ever surf lesson and experience of surfing....... something she loved so much, got her standing up on the board! Great instructions and guidance from her instructor. Great value for money. Gave her confidence and an amazing experience.

The surf lesson was great fun! Johnny was friendly and full of energy, which helped me feel confident and enthused about the experience. There were seven of us in the group which felt like a reasonable number of people to be teaching at one time, and the two hour session made me feel much more positive about attempting it alone next time.
