Why winter swells are ideal for improver surfing lessons

A common misconception about winter surfs is that it’s too cold, too dangerous and intimidating for anyone other than an expert. But for improvers, the winter is not this big terrifying obstacle but the greatest opportunity for growth. In this blog we will discuss why winter surfs are your best friend and how we as a leading expert in surf tuition can provide you with safe surfs, quick progression and highly effective improver surf lessons in Cornwall’s winter conditions.

The Unbeatable Benefits of Winter Swells for Improvers

Consistent, Powerful Waves

In the summer, we enjoy hot sunny days filled with minimal Atlantic storms and high pressure weather for a few months. However these conditions have a knock on effect causing weak small waves, still good fun but less power to play with. But the winter delivers regular, energy-filled swells that are perfect for manoeuvres providing the necessary speed and shape to get you turning like a pro.

Masterful Coaching in Real Conditions

Summer surfing vs winter surfing, vastly different but each with their own lessons. Summer is an ideal time for beginners and those looking to develop their ability. Winter teaches you to build your skills in more dynamic conditions. If you can conquer a winter wave, summer will be a breeze. Here at Wavehunters, our coaches’ teach crucial advanced techniques in a controlled, safe environment taking full advantage of the winter swells.

Empty Lineups, More Waves

Empty line ups equal more waves. Long gone are the summer crowds, meaning less competition for waves and more time surfing. By dramatically increasing your wave count your muscle memory improves, allowing you to start focusing on how you ride the wave rather than correcting your posture during your Wavehunters lesson.

Conquering the Cold: It’s Easier Than You Think

Don’t let the cold stop you from going for a surf. With new modern technology wetsuits have never been warmer, 5mm or even 6mm wetsuits are now readily available to buy/hire. Boots and gloves are designed to keep you toasty without inhibiting your surf and don’t forget the extra benefit of a thermal rash vest! Winter surfing has never been warmer or comfier, there is truly no excuse anymore!

What to Expect in a Wavehunters Winter Improver Lesson

  • When you book into an improver lesson, the first thing to know is that the lesson slot we have opened will be at the ideal tide time ensuring you have the best conditions.
  • Once you are kitted up, the coach will take you to our surfboard room and help pick the best board for you and the conditions.
  • The start of your lesson will always be safety, no matter your level, a small refresh is key.
  • Next your coach will assess your current level – both on the beach and in the water – before discussing your goals for the session ahead. Once that is established the fun begins!
  • You will be focusing on technique, turning and paddling out back on a gentle 2-3ft day. If you are struggling in certain areas that will become the focus, honing in on your skill and pushing you to improve.
  • At the end of the lesson you will be guided on your personal next steps, shown which days will be best for you to surf alone and the best spots.
  • The goal of our improver lessons is to help give you the tools to improve and practise on your own. Surfing as a sport is all about consistency and practising outside of lessons is key to success.

Is a Winter Improver Lesson Right for You?

An improver lesson is perfect for those looking to progress to catching green waves independently. To be ready for green waves you must be consistent in catching broken waves (white water waves), turning left and right in full control with the correct posture and technique. These are key to ensure when you are up on an unbroken wave, you have the foundations to ride the wave correctly. If you are unsure of where you are, just give us a call or pop in, here at Wavehunters we offer free skill assessments to place you in the right lesson.

Stop Treading Water. Start Progressing.

Winter is not the time to hibernate; it’s your secret weapon for becoming a better surfer faster. Surfing alone in the winter can be intimidating and slow, but with Wavehunters’ guidance, it’s the most effective step you can take. You’ll be welcomed by a warm community of like minded surfers all braving the cold to enjoy a true winter’s surf. Take the plunge and book a lesson with Wavehunters, you will not be disappointed.
